Reading for 1/26/10

I had to read chapters 2, 6, and 7 in the omnivore’s dilemma. In chapter 2 Pollan describes Americas farm’s today. He is at George Naylor’s farm in Iowa, which is primarily a Corn/soybean farm. To begin Pollan talks about the history of the Naylor farm and how back in the day they had a wide variety of plants, and now they only have a couple. Then he hits on the point that Naylor’s farm provides food for ~129 Americans, which is much higher than back in the day even with the amount of farmers decreasing greatly. Pollan also tells us about how now its about maximizing the amount of bushels per acre, and not really the quality of corn that results from it. In chapter 6 Pollan describes how America has become a country addicted to corn and how everyone is getting lazier and lazier and going out to eat at fast food restaurants more often than they should. This is why America is the most obese country in the world. Chapter 7 is about Pollan’s meal at the end of the industrial food chain which he tracked from a bushel of corn, through the grain elevator, through his cow, into the slaughter house, and onto his plate as chicken nuggets, a salad, cheeseburger, soda, and fries. And he eats this meal and takes the same meal to a mass spectrometer which told them exactly how much corn was in what they ate, the soda was 100%, milk shake 78%, salad dressing 65%, chicken nuggets 56%, cheeseburger 52%, and French fries 23%.

In Chapter 1 of They Say I Say, it starts off talking about some sociologist named Dr. X who did a bunch of work but didn't have a thesis or a point. Also the importance of order of what you say in your writing to keep the reader's engaged. Also when writing an argumentative paper or whatever, you should say what other people think about the subject before you present your side of the argument. Then there are some tips about how to start your introduction, for example using a quote that tells some statistic or fact about the subject that the reader might not know. Afterwards there are some templates about introducing sentences. After a various amount of different situations and styles of introducing, they conclude the chapter
